This post is all about the amazing men we have in our lives: the husbands, dads, brothers, uncles, friends; whoever they are, this post is for them. It’s been a little while since there has been something for the guys here on OHP so I thought it would be a good time to have a giveaway. I’m excited to be working with JORD watches again this Fall and will be spoiling a lucky reader with a $100 gift credit towards one of their amazing wood watches!
On the topic of spoiling… I feel like us mamas talk about how much it means to us to hear that what we do is appreciated (especially on those tough days when it feels like everything is going wrong), but I think it’s important that our hubbies do too. Families are a team effort and both moms and dads can feel left in the dust and forgotten after a crazy day. I know ours wouldn’t be as strong as it is if it wasn’t for the guy I’m on this crazy ride with, and he’s not just a great hubby, but an awesome Dad too.
Will is a pretty casual guy and I’ve always joked that his personal uniform is a t- shirt, hoodie, and cargo shorts or jeans. And now as a Dad, these wardrobe staples are pretty much perfect since he spends plenty of time chasing our two monkeys. He doesn’t treat himself very often so when I got the chance to work with JORD again I felt like one of their wood watches couldn’t go to a more deserving and selfless guy. This watch fits in nicely with his casual style, but will also look great dressed up for a night out (date night!). He went with the walnut and black option from the Hyde series, and it really suits him.
Whether the man in your life is a suit and tie kind of guy or more the t- shirt and jeans variety, JORD’s wood watches are the perfect accessory (they also make beautiful wood watches for women, see mine in this post from last year). Their watches combine classic with contemporary style making them a great choice for anyone whatever the occasion: from a day at the office to Dad life. If you have a guy that deserves a little spoiling, a JORD watch would make a nice gift (you can also get them engraved for an extra- special touch) plus you can enter to win a $100 gift credit towards one of their wood watches below! (Added bonus: everyone who enters will receive a $25 gift credit just for entering!).
Even thought it’s still Summer, the first day of September always feels like Fall to me. And with it comes a switch in the style department towards more layers and cozy additions (think scarves, hats & booties for starters). It’s a great time of year to shop your closet and maybe add a few key pieces that you’ve been missing or had your eye on.
But just because Summer’s coming to an end doesn’t mean you can’t wear some of your warmer weather items in the cooler months. Getting a bit creative can extend the wear you get out of certain pieces like shorts and tank tops and can stretch your style budget. Things like tights and sweaters are definitely Fall favourites and can mean you don’t have to put away some of your favourite lighter pieces just because the temperatures are cooling.
Since this time of year marks a change in seasons I’m sharing how to take a few key pieces from your Summer wardrobe and transition them to Fall, along with some footwear ideas. Booties are a favourite item that go with so many things and can get dressed up or dressed down. I’ve also included a pair of runners in this post that are great for errands or taking the kids to and from activities without compromising on style or comfort.
Starting with a few key pieces, shop your closet for different items to create a variety of outfits, and make note of items you’d like to purchase. Think of how you can pair the same piece with a variety of others you already own, only adding something to your shopping list when you identify something you know you can wear in a variety of ways (this will help you save money and ensure the pieces you buy will work well with what you’ve already got). I started with a Summer outfit of a top, shorts and flip flops, and shopped my closet for different pieces that could be mix- and- matched to create several outfits.
I created the outfits in this post with items most of us already have in our closets to show how adding just a few new pieces can be all it takes to inspire some Fall #ootds (jeans, tights, a denim vest, sweater, jacket, a scarf, hat, and footwear). The good news: it can be a as simple as adding layers and accessories to bring your Summery items into the Fall. If you want some ideas to transition your style into Fall, I hope you’ll find these tips helpful!
I started with this floral outfit: a light sleeveless top & shorts with my favourite flip flops…
Perfect for days when it’s cool vs cold and you just need an extra layer to keep your legs warm. Tights look really cute paired with booties and you can throw on a sweater if things really start to cool off. Mix and match shorts and tights with some favourite tops for a variety of looks (I love the combo of different patterns/ fabric textures). I definitely went for a casual outfit here, but how cute would heels be to dress things up?
2. A jacket (+ scarf)
Need a little extra warmth? Swap out a sweater for your favourite jacket. Stay warm without feeling like your outfit is too heavy. And if things are really starting to cool off…
…add a scarf for a little extra warmth/ style. Cool Fall days are a perfect excuse to add an extra layer and add contrast/ interest to an outfit (I love the combo of different patterns like stripes and florals).
Great year- round, no? For those in- between days when things are cool but not cold, a denim vest is a classic item that works with lots of wardrobe pieces. It can add a different texture/ colour to your outfit and is a great piece for those days where it’s cool but still warm enough to skip sleeves. And who doesn’t own a pair of jeans? I liked pairing this floral top with my white jeans but classic blue denim goes with pretty much everything. Also- a cute excuse to rock a Canadian tuxedo with denim on top and bottom. 😉 I went with black lace runners for this outfit but booties would look super cute too (see what I mean about how easy/ interchangeable everything is when you have the right pieces?).
4. A hat
Hats are the perfect finishing touch to many an outfit and add an extra element of style and personality. Dig through those ones you put away for the Summer or treat yourself to a new one (or a few!) for the Fall to help keep cozy. A cute pom pom toque is a fun option on colder days, with a wide- brimmed beauty being a great choice that you can wear throughout the seasons. Just a little warning: once you become a hat person there’s no going back. 😉
Welcome to the days of sun, sand, dribbly watermelon and popsicle faces, long warm days, and everything else that comes with Summer. The best. Whether you head to the beach or pool or just hang out in your backyard, these days are meant to be enjoyed and memories made. It isn’t about all the things, it’s about filling up a pool- maybe inflating a floatie or two- and giving the kids a bucket and water as entertainment. Voila, unplugged childhood at it’s best.
This time of year, I can’t be outside with the kids enough. Grab the swimsuits/ Summer clothes, lob on the sunscreen and (half an hour later some days!) we’re outside for as much of the day as possible. We eat all 3 meals outside if I have it my way and they come in for nap/ bed time dirty, tired, and smelling of the sun and fresh air. I loved the idea of sharing about one of our beach days for this post, but wrangling these two for photos requires more than this mama’s two arms. So I figured a backyard shoot was in order, plus it’s where so much of Summer is spent as a family and I love that this wasn’t a super- styled photo shoot. Just me with the kids hanging out in the backyard getting up to shenanigans; some pretty cute moments were captured that will be getting printed and added to our gallery wall.
I had the chance to team up with a few of my favourite local brands to share some comfortable Summer styles (see some twinning mermaids below) and ideas to get you through the hottest season of the year. What was great about this backyard shoot is it doesn’t get any more laid- back than this. Well, as laid back as it gets with two kids running wild and loose. 😉 But that’s what Summer and childhood is about, and when you’re making memories, there’s nothing better. Comfort goes a long way this time of year and finding quality pieces that stand up to the elements and activities that come with Summer can make getting ready for a day spent outside that much easier. It doesn’t feel like that long ago that there weren’t so many cute choices for boys, but that’s changed in a big way and Liam loved hamming it up for the camera. I hope you like our Summer style picks- we’ve got some talented locals around here and they make it easy to dress for these hot days! All sources provided at the end of this post.
5 Summer Style Tips for Mama + Kids
1. Hats– More than a cute accessory, these help protect from the sun, and there are plenty of options out there for all members of the family. For littles, ones that have a strap for under the chin can help keep them from removing them, but as kids get older those styles can be harder to find. It took some getting used to, but Liam now wears a snap back (this Mahalo one is by Aloha Kai) . Even though this style doesn’t cover the back of the neck, it gives his face good coverage and I load on plenty of sunscreen anyways. Styles with adjustable straps also mean you can get a few seasons out of them and they’re great year- round. I like a variety of styles for myself, but my beach hat of choice this year is anything with a brim while I build up my tan for the season (see this post for a cute beach hat DIY).
2. Tops– The classic tee is hard to beat, but tank tops are a versatile option for days when it’s too hot even for a t- shirt and you don’t want anything on your shoulders (you know, those days when it feels too hot to wear anything). Perfect as a quick cover- up at the beach/ pool (buy a size up if you want them less- fitted for this purpose, and get an extra year out of them too) and a comfortable option to prevent chafing from seat belts and car seat straps. They’re a quick/ easy style option that you can throw on with any bottoms and double as great pj tops to wear to bed on hot Summer nights (ie those nights when the kids fall asleep in the car on the way home).
3. Cover ups– Whether you go for a maxi dress, skirt, or another option, a cover- up is a perfect extra layer when you’ve got a beachy breeze or want to layer- up for a Summer picnic. Hooded towels or over- sized tops are a great option- especially for kids- but if you want something to wear from the beach to the dinner table, something that’s comfortable and easy to slip on are two things I’m looking for. A comfortable top (again with the tank tops!) with a skirt work great and still allows you to move as you chase your monkeys kids around (this bright watermelon one is from Lone Wolf Boutique– see this post for another one of her styles perfect for Summer).
4. Swim suits– I don’t think I could write a post on beach/ pool/ Summer style without including this seasonal staple! When it comes to kids, you can find everything from UV- protecting styles to ones that are just plain cute, and everything in between. This is a time of year to have fun outdoors and you want everyone to be comfortable in the heat. Choose options that suit your lifestyle when it comes to shopping for both the kids and your own suits. I can’t resist a cute pair of swim shorts or a bikini for my two, but they also have fuller- coverage UV protecting styles for long days when the sun is scorching hot. And for Moms, I know the swim suit debate is a personal one. I love a 2- piece, but some days a 1- piece is the better choice based on our activities. And if you prefer more coverage there are plenty of stylish 1 and 2- piece suits out there. The 1- piece I’m wearing in this post is from All Twerk and No Pray and it’s my go- to 1- piece (also great paired with a skirt or shorts!). For a fuller- coverage 2- piece style, see this post.
5. Bottoms– When it comes time to pack up and head to the beach, shorts and skirts are essentials, but for cool Summer mornings and evenings, having comfortable pieces that provide more coverage from the shade and breeze are good to keep in mind for everyone. Comfortable leggings for all are a great choice and allow for plenty of running, swimming, and other movement. As the day warms up, simply swap for those shorts/ skirts, or swimsuits. For Moms, they’re a comfortable option that offers more coverage if you don’t love shorts (a capri- style is perfect if you don’t want to wear full- length ones in the heat) and can comfortably slip over a 1- piece or paired with a bikini top. Pick a pair made for yoga/ working out; the material will provide optimal comfort and movement in the heat. Two of my favourite local brands that combine quality, comfort, and style are Inner Fire and Kristina Benson Art (see this post and this post).
So there you have it. A few ideas to help get you and the kids through the Summer in comfort and style, and hopefully some new ideas to arm you for the hot days ahead. I’d love to hear what your essentials are for this time of year and your favourite Summer staples! Like these ideas? Or not? What would you change/ add?
The love for all things Canada continues today on OHP! Canadian- themed decor is pretty trendy right now, but the cabin/ woodsy/ lumberjack themes have been classic style trends for home and style for as long as I can remember. Whether you like to incorporate it into your home or your wardrobe (or both!) there are plenty of options out there to choose from. Have some fun with your style and decor with this selection of 10 items that celebrate Canada (with everything costing $75 or less!).
No matter where in Canada you live, there’s no place like home and I’ve rounded up 10 favourites for home and style as part of my #Canada150 celebrations here on the blog. Being from BC, the woods, ocean, and outdoors play a big part in my life and I couldn’t resist including a few provincial items too. Whether you just like them for the Summer, or use year- round, I hope you like these ideas for adding some ‘Eh’ into your life!
Anyone else counting down the days to Summer? This Spring hasn’t been the greatest for weather and it’s got me craving the sun and heat in a major way. The West Coast is a beautiful place to live but we have so much grey and rain that we earn the blue skies and hot weather for the few short months they’re here.
And with that sun comes all the things for Spring and Summer in our wardrobes: tees, shorts, flip flips, maxi dresses… I’ll take one of everything. ;). I teamed up with Chews Boutique on a fashion feature in the Fall (see that here) and we’ve got together again to share some style ideas for the Spring and Summer (also perfect to take on vacation!). We paired everything with items you’ve probably already got in your closest to show how easy and versatile her pieces are to wear- perfect if you like pieces that can multitask and go with a variety of items you already own.
All of the pieces Chelsey carries in her online shop combine comfort with style, with everything under $70. Comfort, style, aaaand at a good price? Check, check, check! Like I said, I’ll take one of everything ;). See below for 5 outfits perfect for the warmer weather featuring pieces available from Chews- just add sun!!!
It’s hard to pick a favourite, but it’s safe to say that Chelsey stocks her online shop with some pretty great pieces. Whatever is on your warm weather style wish list, make sure you check out Chews, you definitely won’t come away disappointed. We always have a good time when we get together for shoots and we had a blast with Akane shooting the photos for this post- I hope it gave you some ideas for your Spring and Summer style!

It’s finally SPRING! And that means longer days, warmer weather, aaaaaaand Summer isn’t too far away! Whether you’re planning a beach- y holiday or are just looking for some cute pieces for the warm months ahead, this post is all about the things to help you make the most of sunny days. So grab the SPF and your favourite pair of sunnies, it just gets better from here!
First up: swim suit. Pretty much a staple when it comes to Summer and a necessity when you’re hopping on a plane to sit on a beautiful beach somewhere. This peachy suit is a 2- piece from The Secret Closet, perfect if you aren’t a fan of one- pieces but still like a little extra coverage. And for bikini lovers like me, you’ll also like that the strap is removable and the bottom is reversible (this one has a pretty floral print on the other side) and can be rolled down if you like a lower- lying bikini bottom. Also: anything with a little bit of sparkle makes you feel kind of like a mermaid, and how can you not have fun when you’re channeling your inner Ariel? 😉 You can visit The Secret Closet owner, Nicole, in Maple Ridge to try on the swim suits so you find one that’s the perfect fit and style- the hardest part is narrowing down all the cute choices!
Next up: beach essentials. Think cover up, towel, and bag. For travel, I think anything with a zipper is a good option to keep your personal belongings like wallet and travel documents safe. This striped beauty is my go- to for everyday and has doubled as a carry- all when I go away for a few days. If you’re in charge of plane tickets and passports when it comes to vacations, a passport holder is a great idea to help keep everything together and organized. The one below is made by Pecan Tree Creations, and there are a few options available including holders for up to 6 passports, so if you’re travelling with the whole family you can keep everyone’s passports and documents all together. It has an elastic closure to keep everything secure and you can pick from several pretty prints (how perfect would this be to give as a grad gift with some money tucked inside for someone you know planning a post- grad trip?).
If you like to cover up while you hunt down the perfect beach- side ice cream cone, there are so many cute options and I’ve shared two completely different ones below. The first is this pretty cover up from Jammy and Co that doubles as a dress when you wear a slip underneath. It’s lightweight and perfect if you want a light layer over top your swim suit, or want something that serves double- duty when you travel and saves on packing space. I love that it goes with anything and you can take it from beach to dinner with a quick change out of your swim suit and into a light layer underneath (they also make cute options in kids sizes if you’re looking for something for your little lady- how cute would twinning at the beach be?!).
If you’re like me and love a good towel for the beach, or want a plush one to take on vacation, this wearable poncho towel from LOLL is a great option. Throw it over your other beach layers to stay warm with the ocean breeze, use it dry off, or use it to change in and out of your swim suit underneath. There’s a zip on both sides or pop it on and off over your head. I love how soft and thick it is- plus the hood is a nice added bonus to keep warm. Whether you lie on it to soak up some sun, or throw it over your bathing suit it’s great for the pool and beach (think walking to and from the beach/ pool at a hotel on vacation). If you’ve ever been on a cruise, you know that walking on deck while the ship is moving can make for an extra cool breeze and this would be perfect to stay warm, especially for those late- night dips in the pool. 😉 Also- how perfect would this be to curl up in for a fresh air nap? There are several designs available, including Turkish towel options and thick terry towels like this one. Whether for the beach, to take to a sunny vacation spot, or for Summers spent at home, this is a towel I’m glad to have discovered. Now I just need Summer to hurry up and get here!
OK, last thing I want to mention: I feel like vacations are an excuse to buy a few cute outfits. 😉 Or if you’re staying close to home this Summer, now’s the perfect time to start thinking about your warm weather wardrobe. You can’t beat a classic t- shirt, and the great thing is you can wear them year- round. Hawaii holds a special place in my heart and I love Aloha Kai’s line of apparel inspired by the Islands. This ‘You Had Me At Aloha’ tee goes with everything and is super soft and comfortable. Wear it with jeans until it really warms up or pair with shorts or cute skirt (might have to try this with a pretty tulle number as well 😉 ) … And then there’s this pineapple skirt from Lone Wolf Boutique– I don’t think it gets more fun than this! (I also can’t wait to wear this skirt with my swim suits this Summer). Owner Stephanie and I actually went to high school together and I was so excited to get to include her in this post (she’s also got a watermelon print skirt I’ve got my eye on that’s super cute). This outfit just makes me smile and I think is a great example of some of the fun things you can work into your Summer wardrobe. And seriously- just try not to love that pineapple print. Just try. It’s just plain fun and that to me is what Summer/ vacation and the clothes that come with it are all about.
I hope this post gives you some ideas for the warm weather ahead! BC in the Summer can’t be beat and for those of you lucky enough to be heading on a vacation this year, I hope you enjoy a yummy cocktail on the beach for me. Now it’s just a waiting game until the hot days of Summer get here!
One of things I wanted to share more about on the blog this year is stuff for guys. I feel like there are so many amazing options out there for us ladies and the kids, but wanted to scope out some of the products made for the guys in our lives. Whether you’ve got a hairy fella like I do who’s in need of some grooming products, a guy who loves his beer, or who just likes finding new things to try, I rounded up a variety of local brands to share some ideas guys will love.
We like to support local/ small business as much as possible and we’re lucky to have so many great options locally to choose from. Aloha Kai (‘Super Blessed’ hat) and Locomotive Clothing (t- shirt) both make great pieces for everyone in the family, with a great selection of items for men. If your favourite man doesn’t like carrying a bulky wallet but needs something for his essentials like cards and cash, the handmade leather wallets by Bomber Supply & Co are a great solution, and come in 3 different colours.
If your man likes his products (or maybe you’re trying to encourage him to use some- beards need taming after all 😉 ), there are plenty to choose from that are made using high quality, natural ingredients; nothing weird or full of chemicals. Nothing is over powering in terms of scent, and whether your fella is looking for shaving products (think that mug, shave soap & badger bristle brush by The Printed Pug & Is It Bath Time Yet?), beard grooming essentials (how about beard shampoo and oil from The Badass Gentleman’s Collection by Red Lemon Natural Living?), or just a good bar of soap to wash the dirt of the day away (that dark bar by OnceUpon Bath & Body contains olive oil, seas salt, and activated charcoal to keep skin healthy and clear), he won’t be stuck for ideas. And if he’s in need of some TLC and unwinding, the brown sugar & fig candle by Caribou Candle Co is a great scent to help him relax while he’s in the shower (even if they won’t admit it, I know a few guys who don’t mind a candle or two).
…And how about when it’s time to unwind a little? There are so many great local breweries to choose from- many liquor stores now have a great selection or you make a date night out of it and visit the brewery to try out what they’ve got to offer. Trading Post Brewing is one of our local favourites and you can get growler fills at their Langley brewery. Now how to get all that beer home (or maybe you’re giving some to someone special)? Stock up on some good bottles and pop them into a wood caddy (this one is handmade by CPC Woodcraft); they’re great for transport and make an attractive addition to a home bar or man cave. And when it comes time to enjoy those brews, Shop Ava to Zoe makes a variety of handmade leather items including these ‘Brew, Enjoy, Empty, Repeat’ leather coasters that will keep drips off furniture but manly enough they won’t mind using them. Win- win for everyone. 😉
I hope this round- up gives you some ideas for the man in your life to try! I loved learning about how many locals offer products for guys and we’re enjoying trying out the shaving and beard products as Will continuously experiments with his facial hair (so far the man bun/ ponytail has been left intact). I’d love to hear what guy products are a hit in your family!
