How often do you look in the fridge and ask yourself what you’re going to make for dinner? Hop on Pinterest for meal prep ideas only to have those pins sit untried as busy weeks go by? Sometimes we’ve got the best of foodie intentions but struggle to get from the planning phase to execution; another week goes by and we’ve hit our head against the wall again.
Meal prep and planning is one of those things that I’ve been trying to get into a routine with for a long time now. I go through phases where I’m better at it than others, but overall I haven’t found my groove with it. I’ve found it frustrating since we’re a family that loves food, but admittedly I have a hard time finding the time some weeks. It’s still a goal of mine for the year- right up there with homemade gluten free pasta and sourdough bread- but I’ve learned to not be so hard on myself for those weeks that it doesn’t happen, there will always be days that things just don’t come together.
And that’s where meal delivery services have stepped in and been a big game changer for many. When you still want home-cooked meals (and maybe love cooking just don’t have the time you wish you did for it) and are finding it challenging to think up ideas/ prep/ cook, these services take away a lot of the work and simplify things: pick a few meals from a curated menu, choose your delivery date, and wait for your food to arrive. Simply follow the recipe and enjoy a meal that takes less than 30 minutes to make. You don’t have to compromise on quality, health, or taste, and your family still enjoys a home-cooked dinner.
As I’ve been exploring meal options, the one thing I continue to go back to is the quality of ingredients; it’s been a focus of mine for a while and finding options that are gluten free, organic, non-GMO, etc are at the top of my list. I haven’t found that there are as many options that check those boxes, but one company that does is Fresh Prep. Our family enjoyed trying out some of their meals last Summer and we enjoyed some more meals from them at the beginning of the year. Hands- down my favourite thing about Fresh Prep is the ingredients and that they offer meals that suit our family’s dietary needs (ie gluten free).
We had fun trying out some recipes we may not have otherwise given a chance, and both Will and I enjoyed putting together the meals- the recipes are simple to follow and everything comes pre-measured to shave down prep time. All you have to do is unpack, follow the recipe- with minimal prep needed- and serve. Nothing took more than 30 minutes and even the two monkies enjoyed their Fresh Prep meals. We tried the 2-serving meal option since the kids don’t always eat a big meal at dinner, but I’d definitely recommend the 4- serving meal option for families with older kids and/ or big appetites. We had ours delivered on a Sunday for the week ahead and appreciated having two nights a week that we didn’t have to think about dinner. Sometimes having one less thing to think about can make the day go a little smoother.
Everything comes delivered in a cooler bag, with the meat kept separate to keep it cool, and all other ingredients organized by meal in brown paper bags (fun fact: all packaging is recyclable/ decomposable, just rinse and place back in the cooler bag for Fresh Prep to pick up at their next delivery). Each week you place your cooler bag outside your door for Fresh Prep to swap with your next order, and if you want to add meals or skip weeks, it’s easy to make changes to your account. This is a user- friendly service and I appreciate how Fresh Prep has tried to make it as simple as possible for families to enjoy fresh, healthy meals.
If your family has been considering a meal prep service, this is one I would happily recommend. It’s quick and easy to set up an account and place an order, and you’ll have everything delivered right to your door. Fuss- free and without compromising on the quality of food your family enjoys, yes please! And just in case you’re still on the fence, enjoy 3 plates for free with code HAPPYPLACE17.
