Two words: craft beer. It puts a big smile on my face when I hear those two words together and I had the chance to co- host an event inspired by my favourite hoppy drink, the #HopsShopRepeat pop up, on the long weekend at The Handpicked Home in White Rock. This event combined craft beer and shopping plus a giveaway from everyone involved- cheers to a fun evening! One of the best things that has come from this blogging journey is the people I’ve met and businesses I’ve had the chance to work with and this is made even better when the opportunity comes along to bring a few of them together for an event like this.
Together with Trading Post Brewing, CPC Woodcraft, and Shop Ava to Zoe, we had an evening full of craft beer- inspired fun and it was the first event that I brought The Surrey Girl Project to (Piya will be carrying the Surrey neighbourhood tees from Locomotive Clothing in shop soon!). Our hope for the event was to encourage visitors to meet the makers behind one of the local brands Piya carries in THH, get introduced to a local craft beer brewery, and have everyone have a good time while shopping local. I think we succeeded and it was a great evening full of friends and fun.
Piya (the owner of THH) and I have been good friends since she opened her shop about two years ago (happy shopiversary friend!!) and we’ve teamed up on a bunch of things, but this was the first pop up like this we’d organized. We’d been scheming for a month or two about how everything would come together and as soon as we knew Candice and Carlos from CPC Woodcraft were able to make it on the 6th we saved the date. Thanks to Piya and a few of the brands carried in shop and Trading Post Brewing, we had a craft- beer themed giveaway that shoppers could enter; shopping + craft beer and a giveaway? I think we got in some good stuff there. 😉
We held this 2- hour pop- up on the Sunday of the long weekend and had fun handing out samples of 1827 Helles Lager and Rye Amber Ale with Kristin from Trading Post and introducing shoppers to the makers behind CPC Woodcraft (have you seen their handcrafted beer caddies and openers?? Even if you’re not a beer drinker their handmade pieces are great for wine and other bevvies). We’re already chatting about another pop up event and can’t wait. If you missed this pop up, you can see some of the highlights from the event below and if you made it out we hope you had as much fun as we did. Cheers to good times with good friends!
Thank you to everyone who helped bring this pop up together, took part, and came out for an evening of craft beer + shopping on the long weekend! Can’t wait for the next one and hope you can make it when we plan it. Cheers!
Canada Day might be over but it’s still the year of celebration for Canada’s 150th birthday. I wish I could say I’ve seen more of it than I have- insert bucket list suggestions!- but I’ve only ventured as far East as Alberta and I feel like I’ve only just scratched the surface of all the amazing places here in my home province. Here in BC we’re surrounded by plenty of natural beauty and in the Lower Mainland we’re spoiled with a wide variety of places to go, things to do, places to eat… you get the idea. Whether you like the beach, mountains, city, country- it’s all here.
Last month I shared 5 ideas for every occasion in Metro Vancouver on the Impressed App blog (see the full post here), and I’m sharing a few of the highlights here today along with a giveaway to help you save some of your favourite memories from the Summer. You know all those photos you have saved on your phone or on Instagram and never print? Now’s your chance to take them from the screen to your gallery wall: Impressed App will be giving one lucky reader a credit for 24- 30 prints so they can take their favourite photos from their phone and enjoy them in person- simply upload to the app and order! See below for some of my favourite local spots and enter to win from Impressed App!
5 Adventures to Take in Metro Vancouver– Highlights from this post published last month on the Impressed App blog. These are personal suggestions and I was in no way compensated financially or otherwise by any of the businesses included.
You’ve got a night to yourselves but can’t think of where to go? Dinner at the Washington Avenue Grill-aka the WAG- in White Rock is our favourite place. We ate here the night we got engaged and it’s our favourite date night spot (the lobster ravioli is my favourite, but I’ve never had a meal there I didn’t enjoy). The food & service is amazing and there are ocean views from pretty much everywhere in the restaurant. They also make a wicked martini and have live music throughout the week, so no matter when in the week you visit you’ll have a good time. Make reservations just in case!
Girl’s Day/ Night
I don’t know about you, but nothing says time with the girls like a little shopping! My favourite haunt is The Handpicked Home and it’s the perfect stop for decor, apparel, gifts, kid’s items, etc. I met the owner, Piya, when the shop first opened and she’s one of my favourite people and I now count her as a dear friend. Treat yourself or someone else and pay this shop a visit next time you’re in the South Surrey/ White Rock area. If you like to support local this is a great shop minutes from the beach and Piya stocks it with a curated selection of items that highlight many talented locals. After you’d indulged in some retail therapy, stop in at Islands Cafe down the road for some Hawaiian coffee & treats. They ship in the coffee from Maui weekly and their Poke bowls are YUM (their Acai bowls are next on my foodie bucket list and look amazing as well).
DIY Eat & Drink Local Tour
Love to #DrinkLocal and enjoy fresh, seasonal eats? We’ve got plenty of choices in the area whether you’re a beer or wine lover (or both 😉 ), but we’ve also got a cidery in the area as well if you’re looking for some new to try! Fill up on some good food by starting in Fort Langley at Trading Post Taphouse & Eatery and take a scenic drive along the back roads towards Langley and the wineries along 16 Avenue. Enjoy a few glasses of wine along the way and end your day in Langley at Fraser Valley Cider Company. Throughout the Summer and September they’re hosting a variety of different events including a BBQ, long table dinner, and pizza nights. Their craft apple ciders are made from heritage apples grown on the property and in the Okanagan, with 5 flavours currently available. They’re a great gluten free drink option for those limited with beer options, and they’re refreshing served alone or with your favourite Summer meal.
We’re spoiled in the Lower Mainland by all the natural beauty that surrounds us and there are plenty of places to go for scenic walks. Living in Delta our local favourite spot is Burns Bog, just minutes from our home and easily accessed from any direction (just park at the ice rink when you come off the highway/ Perimeter Road). You can walk or bike through and there are several options depending on how long you want to spend (don’t miss the sunken tractor!). Pack a picnic and enjoy enjoy unwinding in the fresh air and soak in some nature. The bog is the largest of it’s kind in North America and you can even book a tour if you want to learn as you go- great for the kids! If you want to make a day of it, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy eating in the fresh air. There’s a gem of a place in Delta called Altmaerker German Deli that offers up sandwiches and other deli fair that will leave you more than satisfied (seriously, they’re amazing and you’ll probably want to stock up again on the way home). Salted pretzels, fresh buns, and other German deli favourites are served alongside ham, pepperoni, and other staples that are perfect lunch fair. Stock up for a European- style picnic lunch and enjoy!

Anyone else counting down the days to Summer? This Spring hasn’t been the greatest for weather and it’s got me craving the sun and heat in a major way. The West Coast is a beautiful place to live but we have so much grey and rain that we earn the blue skies and hot weather for the few short months they’re here.
And with that sun comes all the things for Spring and Summer in our wardrobes: tees, shorts, flip flips, maxi dresses… I’ll take one of everything. ;). I teamed up with Chews Boutique on a fashion feature in the Fall (see that here) and we’ve got together again to share some style ideas for the Spring and Summer (also perfect to take on vacation!). We paired everything with items you’ve probably already got in your closest to show how easy and versatile her pieces are to wear- perfect if you like pieces that can multitask and go with a variety of items you already own.
All of the pieces Chelsey carries in her online shop combine comfort with style, with everything under $70. Comfort, style, aaaand at a good price? Check, check, check! Like I said, I’ll take one of everything ;). See below for 5 outfits perfect for the warmer weather featuring pieces available from Chews- just add sun!!!
It’s hard to pick a favourite, but it’s safe to say that Chelsey stocks her online shop with some pretty great pieces. Whatever is on your warm weather style wish list, make sure you check out Chews, you definitely won’t come away disappointed. We always have a good time when we get together for shoots and we had a blast with Akane shooting the photos for this post- I hope it gave you some ideas for your Spring and Summer style!

Who has a Thomas fan at home? My two- especially Ari- love the blue engine and his friends and it’s always one of the top TV requests in our home. I remember watching Thomas as a kid and I love that he’s still around and as popular as ever. Our house has become littered with wooden train sets and countless trains, and Ari has even requested a Thomas themed birthday party this year. She doesn’t know it yet, but we’re taking her to meet Thomas later this month in Squamish and I’ve got the chance for your family to win a 4- pack of tickets so your little Thomas fan can too!
Thomas makes annual appearances at West Coast Railway Heritage Park every year and he’ll be back again from May 20- 22. Not only do you get to meet the blue engine himself, your family can also enjoy a variety of activities.

Adulting. It’s a thing apparently. And whether we feel like it or not once we get to a certain stage in life we’re deemed grown ups and old enough to do all the things that come with the territory. Sure it’s a lot of fun- I can eat too much ice cream, buy whatever shoes I want, and pursue a career I love- but it’s also busy. I don’t know how many times in a day I joke about coffee and wine (couldn’t adult without them!) and I appreciate coffee even more when it’s hot.
And thankfully there’s plenty of options to choose from with a growing selection for busy days when you’re running from one place to the next to the next without a lot of time. When I was a kid Mac’s Convenience Stores were the corner store you went to after school, after practice, or ‘just because’ to stock up on 5 cent candies and they’re stepping up their coffee game to make getting that perfect cup of coffee a little easier and faster- perfect for busy grown ups (but I still love my 5 cent candies! 😉 ). They are now offering gourmet selections with their Simply Great Coffee machines available at locations throughout Western Canada with popular choices such as lattes, mochacinos, and dark roast coffee- perfect if you’re stopping to pick up a snack on the go, popping in with the kids, or just don’t want to drop five bucks for a good cup of coffee.
If you like trying new things and want to give the new Simply Great Coffee a try, I’ve got some coupons for free coffee to giveaway- enter below for 1 of 5 sets of coupons to try the new Simply Great Coffee (all of the barista- style drinks such as lattes) and Premium coffee (drip coffee available in medium and dark roast). So the next time you’re craving a good cup of coffee, skip the drive through and pop into your local Mac’s to try their new varieties. You save a few bucks and get a good cup of coffee on the go (plus maybe a few candies to reward yourself while you’re at it!). Win- win. Enter below!

When it rains for 2 months straight it makes it interesting when trying to organize an outdoor photoshoot. And of course living here it rains a lot this time of year. So that means sometimes you just need to go for it and shoot in the rain which makes for some crazy hair and plenty of laughs trying to get the shots you want. Thankfully Akane (the photographer I’ve been working with on a few posts) is pretty much up for anything and we ended the shoot with some hot chocolate to warm up. And as you’ll see in the photos, we just tried to laugh through the rain and make the most of the beautiful location. The photos for this post were important to me and I’m glad a little rain didn’t stop us.
But enough about the photoshoot adventure, I’m really excited for this post for a few reasons. The first is that yoga and fitness came back into my life in a big way this year; I had a big reminder in the Summer that I can’t forget to take care of myself and it was the kick in the butt I needed to get back into shape. I’m no star athlete, but I feel better mentally and physically knowing that I’ve made time to exercise in the week. I’m calmer, happier, and it feels good to be taking steps towards a healthier life overall. I’ve made it a priority, had to move some things around, but ultimately it hasn’t been as challenging as I thought it would to fit into my routine. Sometimes it’s just a few minutes of yoga at the end of the day, but it makes a difference. The second reason I’m really excited for this post is that comes with a GIVEAWAY (the last one of the year!) for you, the readers who have supported the blog and me, your love and support means more than you’ll ever know. I thought what better way to go into the holiday season than with a gift for you? I’ve teamed up with some pretty amazing brands- Try On Love, Kristina Benson Art, Free Reign, Mint & Birch, and Built for This Baby– to help you treat yourself, and to serve as a reminder that you can’t forget to LOVE YOURSELF as well as everyone else you care for.
When I was organizing this post, I wanted to work with brands that would help me share my message about not forgetting to make time for yourself, to LOVE yourself, whenever and however you get the time to do so. I know it can be tough, so that’s why I’m hoping this post will help you feel loved and serve as a reminder that what you do is important, you are amazing, and just trying counts for something. We all have challenges and bad days, but we can still find a few minutes for ourselves and it’s so important to do so, so we can be the best version for everyone we love and for ourselves.
So why did I choose the brands I did for this giveaway? With the tee I’m wearing from Try on Love, you probably don’t need any more explanation. This shop is all about being a gentle reminder to love. To love yourself and others, it really does make a difference in the world. What better message could you hope for? Each piece has a small quartz gemstone- the universal gemstone of love- sewn in as a special touch, and I felt these pieces spoke to the message I’ve been sharing about these past few months. Love is such a powerful force, and one that can help people when they’re hurting the most; you never know when a simple gesture can make the difference in someone’s day. Kristina Benson, the talented lady behind the leggings, has combined her passion of art and fitness to create wearable art that becomes a part of your personal journey. The ones I’m wearing are the Surrender leggings. I didn’t realize there was a special meaning behind them until I spoke more with Kristina about them and how this design represented letting go and being at peace. Without knowing it, I had made my selection based on where I was emotionally: trying to let go of some things and move on, to be at peace with things I had been struggling with. All of her designs have a story behind them and they’re as beautiful as they are comfortable to wear.
And if that water bottle from Free Reign looks familiar, it’s because it’s the same one I received on my yoga retreat this Fall (see here and here for more). The founder, Melanie, suffers from chronic pain and is helping to spread the word about not suffering in silence, to have compassion, and to be open about your journey. This lady, her message, and her products have a special place in my heart for very personal reasons and I’m so grateful to have met her. Individuals like this are the positive change we so need in this world and she helped me earlier this year as I worked through some very personal challenges. Mint & Birch is another brand I’ve loved for a long time, and Jessica’s beautiful pieces are all handmade by this talented mama. This bar necklace is a custom piece that says Live Laugh Love in Latin. When she asked me what I wanted, I knew I wanted something I would wear everyday as a reminder for what’s important to me, to represent the journey I’d been on this year. She hand- stamps her pieces, making each one unique and one of a kind, and I love that she pours her heart into her work.
And finally, Built for This Baby is a program I’m excited to share about, helping women to find their inner strength through pregnancy, birth, and beyond. I attended one of Georgia’s workshops this Fall and learnt so much about how my well being and emotional state was much more than what was going on outside of myself- nutrition, sleep, and self care all play in a role- and she reminded me of that. It can be hard, but we can’t forget about ourselves; we have to be advocates for ourselves as well as those we care for. Through yoga, conversation, and guidance from this woman of many talents, I reflected on my journey through motherhood and how it has impacted me, how it affects all women differently. You don’t have to be a new mom to appreciate this program and I am grateful programs like this exist to help us feel connected with ourselves and others as we embrace all that life throws at us, especially when it can feel like we’re losing ourselves trying to keep up with everything.
So now you can see why I fell in love with each of these amazing collaborators and the people behind them. There are so many individuals working to do good in this world, to help us move through life the best way we can, and to be ok when things don’t go smoothly. It’s a journey we’re all on together, and you can’t forget about yourself along the way. This has been a big learning curve for me this year, and I feel like it’s one many others are going through as well. Feeling loved, recognized, and having your feelings acknowledged can make such a difference when you feel overwhelmed. I hope to carry into 2017 with this new- found wisdom and build on what this year started and that you’ll enjoy some exciting things with me and the blog in the new year. This isn’t the last post of the year, but it’s one close to my heart, and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did putting it together.
So what’s up for grabs for one of you lucky readers?

Who else agrees: the right accessories finish make an outfit. They’re the details that bring everything together. And be honest: how often do you notice a great pair of earrings, a hot pair of shoes, or an awesome watch before you notice the clothes? This happens to me all the time and so many times it’s love at first sight. And this time, it’s about a watch. One helluva of a beautiful, wood watch.
JORD makes timepieces that combine classic with contemporary with watches made out of a variety of wood including sandalwood like the one I’m wearing below. They’ve taken something traditional and made it a little more edgy, a little more of a statement. Something about the wood makes it jump out a little more than if it were a traditional metal piece. Even though they offer both men’s and women’s styles, I love that many of them have a unisex vibe- I don’t think mine screams ultra girly and I love that. I can wear it with jeans and t- shirt or pair it with a dressy outfit and heels to add contrast. It’s a heavier piece that you can wear on it’s own or stacked with bracelets and it will look amazing either way. You just have to decide which one you want more, which I think is the hardest part! 😉
… And just in case you find yourself falling in love with these watches like I did, I get to give away a $75 shop credit towards a JORD watch for someone to splurge on themselves! Scroll to the end of the post to enter!
About JORD JORD offers handcrafted wood timepieces that make a statement and suit a modern lifestyle. Their watches are made from materials such as bamboo, ebony, and sandalwood (like the one I’m wearing) and are a fresh twist on a classic item with styles available for both men and women. Whether you’re a watch lover or not, their pieces will have you putting yours on everyday.
Aaaand let’s not forget about that GIVEAWAY I mentioned! I have a $75 e- voucher to give to one lucky reader and for a fun added bonus, everyone who enters (aside from the winner) will receive a $20 e- gift card from JORD!
