Treating Mom + Giving Back this Mother’s Day

There has been a lot about Mother’s Day on the blog this past week or so (don’t miss the Mother’s Day Gift Guide with Ava to Zoe and this Mother’s Day high tea post!). And I’m totally ok with that- any way we can show some love and appreciation to the amazing ladies in this world is ok with me (hi Mum, love you!). Motherhood- parenthood- is one helluva journey and as the saying goes ‘it takes a village’. But what about those single mamas out there doing everything they can for their kids without a partner to help them?

This year The Cake Mama and Ever Red Fresh Designs have teamed up to offer gift ideas that give back. These two ladies have brought their talents together to create Mother’s Day Gift Boxes with a portion of the proceeds being donated to Cause We Care Foundation, a local organization that supports single mothers. Each gift box will contain 6 sugar cookies hand decorated by Izabela (The Cake Mama) and a floral crown or arrangement created by Nicole of Ever Red Fresh Designs. These gift boxes are a lovely idea if you’re looking for something handmade with the added bonus of supporting local businesses and a good cause through your gifting. See below for more info and photos of what you’ll find in these gift boxes!

Mother’s Day High Tea

Sometimes you want to take something you enjoy and make it a little special. A cup of tea and some baked treats are simple pleasures that many of us enjoy, but have you had the pleasure of trying a high tea? It’s like taking the tea parties from your childhood and elevating them to a grown- up version- princess dresses and crowns optional. 😉 The finger sandwiches, British- inspired sweet treats, and a perfectly brewed cup of tea are a part of the experience and it’s something that is enjoyable year- round. Whether you enjoy a day out with some girlfriends or include the kids, I thought this was a sweet idea for Mother’s Day. There are plenty of places to go, but you can also enjoy the high tea experience at home with services like those offered by SocieTea Events, where you can select a package to enjoy in your own home or garden.

Hosting a high tea at home can be as simple or as elaborate as you want to make it- start with a selection of teas and treats and go from the there!- and it’s an opportunity to dress up and have some fun (have you seen all the cute Cake inspired pieces from The Sweet Life Apparel?). The lovely ladies from Sequel Events helped me style and shoot this high tea and we definitely indulged in our girly sides- add in a yummy cake from Hello Cake Co, a few simple DIYs, and some pretty touches like the ones included here from SocieTea Events (they also provide some decor items) and Raggy Girl Vintage, and you’ve got yourself a beautiful afternoon. And if you’ve got something else in mind for Mother’s Day (have you checked out this year’s gift guide?), how cute would it be to host a high tea for a bridal or baby shower? It’s amazing what some pretty vintage- inspired touches and fresh flowers can do. See below for the final results!

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

It’s here! This year’s Mother’s Day Gift Guide has been a labour of love and I’m so excited to finally share it! My blogging partner in crime, Janette from Ava to Zoe, and I have been working hard on getting this gift guide put together over the past couple of weeks and enjoyed coordinating it as a collaborative effort between both of our blogs. We wanted to share some gifting ideas for those special ladies in all the forms of ‘Mom’ they come in, whether for yourself, your own Mom, or the mamas- to- be, and women who are hoping to one day be Moms themselves. We have gathered a group of brands owned and operated by some talented ladies, many of whom are mothers themselves, and we feel that we’ve got something special within the pages for everyone.

Mother’s Day is a chance to show our love and appreciation and we hope you find some ideas in this gift guide that help you show some love (or find some ideas you love for yourself so you can drop some hints). As an added bonus, a selection of the brands included have offered a 15% discount code so you can enjoy some savings while you shop. As moms, we often forget about ourselves or have a hard time finding ‘me’ time while taking care of others, but when you get the chance it’s that much more meaningful. We hope you can find a few minutes for yourself to make a cup of tea (or pour a glass of wine!) and have a look through. Whether you treat yourself, drop some hints, or find something for your own Mom, we hope you enjoy reading the 2017 Mother’s Day Gift Guide it as much as we enjoyed bringing it together.

Fresh Air Mommy Daughter Date

We’ve been spoiled with some beautiful weather in the past moth or so and I’m trying to get outside with the kids every chance I get. Even if I can’t make it to the park I like to get them in the backyard for some Vitamin D accompanied with some digging in the dirt or other fun activity. I take the kids to my parents a few times a week so I can get some work done (I am SO NOT that super mom who can work and juggle kids at the same time, my brain just doesn’t work that way- I give major fist bumps to all the ladies who can) and we’re spoiled with having a pretty great yard there that the kids can be unleashed play in.
While Liam was napping the other day I got outside with Ari for some one- on- one time and she had fun running around and checking out the fun goodies from Uncommon Goods that I was treated to as an early Mother’s Day gift (PS- they will be spending a lot of time at the beach this Summer!).
I’ve been looking for some fun Summer things for myself including a bag that I can fit all of my Summer essentials in (plus fit some of the kid’s stuff), and can take a beating/ isn’t too fussy. This duffel backpack has lots of room for things like towels, snacks, a beach blanket, etc, and you can pretty much pack it to the point of bursting. And since we tend to bring a beach worth of sand home with us when we go, I like that it can be tossed in the wash for easy clean up. There’s pockets on the inside for things like keys, a wallet, cell phone, etc so I can find them easily and skip bringing my purse (yay for carrying less bags!). As an added bonus I love that it’s made from GOTS certified organic cotton that’s ethically made in India and a portion of net proceeds are donated to WWF. Buying products that do good never looked better.
And then there’s this too- cute- for- words portable speaker. I tried paddle boarding for the first time last year (so much fun, if you haven’t already, you’ve got to try it!) and this will be perfect to bring along for some background music (I’m thinking Jack Johnson and Donavon Frankenreiter would be perfect). It’ll fit comfortably in my new backpack or is perfect to bring along to prop on a beach towel on the sand. It’s fitted with foam rubber and a velcro strap inside so you can safely hook up your phone or MP3 player and keep it from getting damaged/ covered in sand (the audio jack fits most standard media players, plus there’s a pluggable hole in the back so you can thread through an external input). You can also set it to your favourite radio station with the FM/ AM tuner so you can have music wherever you go, even if you don’t have an electronic hooked up. Portable speakers don’t get much cuter than this retro one and I love that it protects electronics from water and sand. It’s light weight and easy to pack around- either pop in your bag or carry it by the handle.

I definitely chose some outdoorsy items to treat myself to to enjoy this Summer, but there are so many other great items available from Uncommon Goods. If you need some Mother’s Day gift suggestions for your hubby and kids, see here, here, and here, for some fun ideas. Their website is full of unique items with a goal to connect the maker and their products to individuals looking for special pieces like those you’d find at a pop up event or market, regardless of the distance between them. Uncommon Goods has created a great online marketplace that showcases a variety of items not found in big box retailers, and is supporting independent creators in the process. To see all that they have available, visit their website and find them on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest

Gifts to My Children This Mother’s Day

This year I’ll celebrate Mother’s Day as a Mom of two for the first time.
As the day has approached I’ve been reflecting a lot on the people in my life; on the two little ones that give me the title of Mom, the man I fell in love with who I’m sharing the incredible journey of life & parenthood with, my own parents and family, and the people I’m blessed to know.
And I think: there is no better gift.
I get to enjoy life with these people. To make memories that I will cherish. Share experiences that will be treasured. Capture moments that I’ll never get back, but will look back on fondly. And we each have our own collection of moments that is uniquely our own.
While there are some truly amazing gifts that can be given to show our love and appreciation to our Mothers, I can’t think of a better gift than sharing time together. My Mum’s own mother passed away before I was born and she has now outlived her, making me even more grateful for the time I have with her. This time that I have with her is a gift. I am so blessed to have her as my Mum and to now enjoy her as the Grandmother to my children.
This is something my Mum never got to experience with her mother, making this time even more precious. For all of the amazing things my Mum has done for me and given me over the years, there are two things that that I am most grateful for: her love and the time I have with her. This is a gift unlike any other. A gift I now share with my own children as their Mother. While there will be frustration, sleepless nights. tears, and countless other challenges, I know they will not be in vain. I will look back, as all Mothers do and say ‘they grow up so fast’. I vow to live in the moments- all of them- and remember them as a part of my life’s journey.
These moments are precious. And I will cherish them always.
Tomorrow is Mother’s Day, and I can’t wait to see what memories will be made.
Happy Mother’s Day. I hope you collect some beautiful moments.
