Layer Love: 4 Ways to Transition Your Summer Wardrobe Into Fall

Style Ideas: 4 Ways to Transition Your Sumer Wardrobe Into Fall

Even thought it’s still Summer, the first day of September always feels like Fall to me. And with it comes a switch in the style department towards more layers and cozy additions (think scarves, hats & booties for starters). It’s a great time of year to shop your closet and maybe add a few key pieces that you’ve been missing or had your eye on.

But just because Summer’s coming to an end doesn’t mean you can’t wear some of your warmer weather items in the cooler months. Getting a bit creative can extend the wear you get out of certain pieces like shorts and tank tops and can stretch your style budget. Things like tights and sweaters are definitely Fall favourites and can mean you don’t have to put away some of your favourite lighter pieces just because the temperatures are cooling.

Since this time of year marks a change in seasons I’m sharing how to take a few key pieces from your Summer wardrobe and transition them to Fall, along with some footwear ideas. Booties are a favourite item that go with so many things and can get dressed up or dressed down. I’ve also included a pair of runners in this post that are great for errands or taking the kids to and from activities without compromising on style or comfort.

Starting with a few key pieces, shop your closet for different items to create a variety of outfits, and make note of items you’d like to purchase. Think of how you can pair the same piece with a variety of others you already own, only adding something to your shopping list when you identify something you know you can wear in a variety of ways (this will help you save money and ensure the pieces you buy will work well with what you’ve already got). I started with a Summer outfit of a top, shorts and flip flops, and shopped my closet for different pieces that could be mix- and- matched to create several outfits.

I created the outfits in this post with items most of us already have in our closets to show how adding just a few new pieces can be all it takes to inspire some Fall #ootds (jeans, tights, a denim vest, sweater, jacket, a scarf, hat, and footwear). The good news: it can be a as simple as adding layers and accessories to bring your Summery items into the Fall.  If you want some ideas to transition your style into Fall, I hope you’ll find these tips helpful!

I started with this floral outfit: a light sleeveless top & shorts with my favourite flip flops…

and added…

1. Tights

Perfect for days when it’s cool vs cold and you just need an extra layer to keep your legs warm. Tights look really cute paired with booties and you can throw on a sweater if things really start to cool off. Mix and match shorts and tights with some favourite tops for a variety of looks (I love the combo of different patterns/ fabric textures). I definitely went for a casual outfit here, but how cute would heels be to dress things up?

2.  A jacket (+ scarf)

Need a little extra warmth? Swap out a sweater for your favourite jacket. Stay warm without feeling like your outfit is too heavy. And if things are really starting to cool off…

3. Denim

Great year- round, no? For those in- between days when things are cool but not cold, a denim vest is a classic item that works with lots of wardrobe pieces. It can add a different texture/ colour to your outfit and is a great piece for those days where it’s cool but still warm enough to skip sleeves. And who doesn’t own a pair of jeans? I liked pairing this floral top with my white jeans but classic blue denim goes with pretty much everything. Also- a cute excuse to rock a Canadian tuxedo with denim on top and bottom. 😉 I went with black lace runners for this outfit but booties would look super cute too (see what I mean about how easy/ interchangeable everything is when you have the right pieces?).

Hats are the perfect finishing touch to many an outfit and add an extra element of style and personality. Dig through those ones you put away for the Summer or treat yourself to a new one (or a few!) for the Fall to help keep cozy. A cute pom pom toque is a fun option on colder days, with a wide- brimmed beauty being a great choice that you can wear throughout the seasons. Just a little warning: once you become a hat person there’s no going back. 😉

They’re the perfect transition shoe for heading into Fall and would be super cute for you lucky people going on vacation soon. From Summer to Fall: 5 Days of Sanuk Style- DAY 1 {+ Giveaway!}

When it comes to Summer winding down I’m a pretty big baby- I never want it to end. I love the warm weather and light nights, and all the fun things that come with the season. But then I start to think about cozy sweaters and boots and layers and it’s not so hard to make the transition into the cozier months. And just because August is coming to an end doesn’t mean Summer’s totally finished (even though it still reminds me of back- to- school as a kid and feels that way), right? Right!!!
I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty excited about this post and the next few coming up this week (there will be one each day Monday to Friday!). With help from The Rag Machine and  Quinsco along with a few of my own pieces I’ve styled 5 outfits inspired by 2 pairs of shoes from Sanuk to help you transition your style from Summer into Fall. Starting off with today’s outfit that pairs a fun romper with a pair of boaty shoes, I’ve got an outfit a day for you this week! It’s not time to put away your Summer clothes just yet & let’s face it, rompers are just plain FUN. Oh and did you see that there’s also a GIVEAWAY? I get to give one lucky reader a promo code for any pair of Sanuks they want (your feet will thank you & you will love them!). The contest will be open all week and you can enter in all 5 style posts that will be on the blog this week. See below for outfit details & to enter!

‘Drop It Like It’s Yacht’ Shoes- Sanuk

I love that these shoes are a fun way to keep a little spirit of the Summer in an outfit as the cooler days return. As with all Sanuks I’ve worn, these are super comfortable and go with so many things, even when it’s not the middle of Summer. I scooped up this romper from The Rag Machine in Vancouver (an awesome used clothing shop that sells clothes by the pound– yes you read that right they sell their clothes by weight!) and stacked some pretty bracelets from Quinsco on my wrist. It doesn’t get simpler than that and added bonus: it’s super comfortable!

A Keepsake DIY with First Baby Shoes

I’m sure you’ve seen the leather moccs that so many little ones are sporting all over Instagram, and let’s face it, they’re pretty cute. There are so many brands that offer adorable clothes and accessories for kids and babies that it can be hard to choose. I’m lucky that family and friends have given us gifts and plenty of hand- me- downs for our kids, but I still like to pick out things for them myself (plus I don’t get in trouble if I shop for them! If I bring home shoes for me on the other hand… 😉 ).
This pair of little red booties from First Baby Shoes will be one of those things I keep for Liam even when he’s outgrown them. I love how cute they are and that they hold a special sentimental value since I made them. I love a good craft/ DIY project, but sometimes I just don’t have the time to pull off a Pinterest- inspired project. The kit for these booties allowed me the time to make Liam something special without feeling ‘not good enough’ from all the ideas out there. The cost of a kit is comparable to what you would pay for ready- made leather shoes and I spent about 3 hours over 3 nights working on them (it would have only taken 2, but I goofed a little- you’ll see what I mean). I opted for the Rie design and am really happy with how they turned out. Even if you’re not a savvy crafter, this shoe kit would be a cute and simple project- plus I think one of these kits would make a really cute baby shower or first Christmas gift. I’m sharing how I made them below.
Everything came in this cute keepsake box (inside the lid there’s space to write to/ from and other info as a sweet memory saver). When your little one has outgrown them, you can store them in the box for safe- keeping alongside other sweet keepsakes.
Everything came ready to go, all I had to do was read the instructions and cut the thread (the holes are pre- done as well, making everything pretty much fool proof). Once I laid out all the pieces and cut the thread I watched the tutorial videos a few times to figure out how to put everything together. The instructions are pretty simple and straight- forward, but I’m a visual learner and liked having the option of online videos to help me get started.  The website has instructional videos for all styles available plus the basic stitch needed to sew their shoes, which I found helpful. There was a little bit of a learning curve, but once I got the hang of it, it was really simple. It took me about 3 hours to sew the pair; it would have probably taken a little less time but I made a mistake while I was sewing the second shoe.

Here’s everything laid out; I flipped the pieces to show what the inside and outside look like. A feature I really like about these booties is that they have rubber soles, making them a durable option for early walkers.

I took this photo to show when I goofed making the second shoe- can you spot my boo boo? It just required some unpicking and new stitching, but I opted to finish them on a 3rd night. Otherwise they would have only taken me a night or two to make.

Voila! Boo boo fixed & finished. I love, love, love them and am so happy with how they turned out.

My little dude- I think he likes them! <3
I had fun making these booties and love that they’re something just for Liam. My time might be shared between 2 kids now, but I’m trying to make sure I do things that are special for him, as I did for Ari. I definitely pick my projects a little differently than when I just had 1 kiddo, but I hope this post shows that there are options out there for busy Moms looking for something special for their kids.
