5 Fall Decorating Ideas

It’s getting to cooler weather- Fall is almost here! Once I get over my initial sadness that Summer is coming to an end, I embrace the warmth and coziness that Fall brings into our seasonal decorating. Of course, we have pieces in our home that we like to keep up all year round, and many suppliers of wall art such as Bumbleajx.com provide products that should be kept up all year. However, it is nice to embrace the seasons and adjust the aesthetic of our homes depending on what time of year we’re in. You may have other furniture to decorate in the house such as your sofa or your curtains, or you may even want to get a brand new set of made to measure rugs to really bring that fall warmth into the home. That’s the great thing about redecorating; you get to choose exactly how far or how seasonal you take it. You may want to have a makeover to celebrate halloween even further, and you may want to even get some new blinds to fit the them, these blinds might make the room appear larger. I’m working on some ideas for my home that I’ll be sharing on social media soon, but until then here are some simple ideas I love to incorporate Fall elements into your home decor which is why I can’t wait to tell you about my new Custom Photo Tapestry– happy decorating!

Entryway & Porch

Fill lanterns with items such as pumpkins, gourds, leaves, branches, & candles- beautiful on tables, in a vignette, or as porch decor.
Use a seasonal wreath & some Fall branches to add a warm & welcoming touch to your porch.
Seasonal Fall mums, pumpkins & a bale of hay arranged together add a country- style touch to porches and decks.
For a more contemporary look, seek out ghost pumpkins or artificial versions- if you love a little glitter, covering them in glitter is a fun touch.
To mix contemporary & traditional, combine white elements with the warmth of reds, oranges, and yellows.

Jewellery Advice with JQ Vancouver

Since we’re coming to the end of Spring Break, I’m sure a lot of you ladies are ready for some well deserved me time. Keeping those kiddies occupied can be exhausting, leaving little time for ourselves while coordinating a variety of activities. With this in mind, I’ve been focusing on some things for us Moms this week. We all need some time out just for ourselves, and I thought a nice way to end the week would be with a feature on jewelry ideas (who doesn’t love jewellery???). Whether you love it as a wardrobe staple or bring it out more for special occasions, some carefully selected pieces can make accessorizing a quick & simple process. Jewellery can take an outfit from average to outstanding. If you’re looking for versatility with losing the personal touch, take a look at custom silicone rings. For this post I worked with Chelsey Andrews of JQ Vancouver to bring you some tips when selecting jewellery; here we focus on necklaces, but the tips apply to all jewellery pieces. Here’s to some stylin’ times ladies!
Look for pieces that can be casual & formal. Versatility is key. Stretch your budget by selecting pieces you can wear for a variety of occasions- from work to coffee dates to special nights out. My friend told me that Seersucker Sassy preppy necklaces are pretty and diverse. It is worth giving them a look.

Pick items that are great layered or as stand alone pieces. For example, a dainty name necklace looks great on it’s own, as well as when it’s paired with a few other similar necklaces. It’s all about mixing and matching when it comes to jewelry!

A great way to make a statement is with a well- selected piece. For the right occasion- and outfit- layering 2 or more pieces can be even more stunning. Pendants, colours, length, and textures add visual interest when layering.
Splurge on classic pieces & be budget savvy with trendy items. Be strategic when making selections, allocating more money for pieces you will likely keep & wear for years to come. Items in classic tones such as silver & gold will go with more items in your wardrobe and you can make up for the simple colour choices by selecting bold pieces. Be selective when purchasing trendy items that may only be worn for a few months; what you might love right now may be forgotten come next season’s trendy choices.

I love being able to provide women with necklaces they love and can wear with anything they already have in their wardrobes, whether it be a t-shirt or a dress. One of the biggest challenges for me is continually coming up with new designs that are different and just trusting that the design is something women will want to wear.
I started JQ
Vancouver in March of 2013. At the time, I started noticing through social
media and boutiques that a lot of local bloggers and jewelry designers were
emerging. I went to Fashion Design School so I felt I had the basic knowledge
on business and design. I’ve also always loved accessories so I decided designing
jewelry would make a great hobby and business adventure as well! It began with
a lot of research on different necklace designs, pendants, what other designers
were doing, what stores were selling and how I could be different. I had a few
visions of necklace designs so I, again, researched and then started ordering.
I really just jumped right into it and started ordering different pendants and chain and just let my creativity flow. I was super lucky to be working at Muse Social Fashion House and was given the ok to have my designs in store!
I think it’s really important to just trust yourself and believe that you have the skills to do whatever you set your mind to and just let things flow the way they will with no expectations. If you take it slow and step by step I think anything is attainable!

Amazing Mom Feature: Katrina Bergen

     This week’s Amazing Mom is Katrina Bergen. Since 2006 Katrina has helped capture precious moments in the lives of families and their new additions with her business, Wee Piggies & Paws. Katrina takes the impressions of hands, feet, & paws and creates plaster casts that serve as a 3D souvenir & keepsake; clients can choose from a variety of options including ornaments and shadowboxes which incorporate photos. She also creates beautiful & unique jewellery cast out of silver using fingerprints & hand writing- the result is a personal piece that the receiver will cherish. 
      
      Katrina bought the franchise in order to stay home to raise her daughter and has since developed it into a successful enterprise that has grown with her family. What an amazing way to earn an income: help capture precious moments in time so parents can remember them long after their bumpkins are grown. I love that Katrina’s work is so personal and how she puts her heart into her work.      One of a kind custom keepsakes of your childs
precious hand and foot prints. Shadowboxes, statues, fingerprint necklaces and
shoe bronzing.

What is the price point? 
      Starting as low as $25 but the average customer spends $300

How long have you been operating and how did you start? 
      I had heard about franchises from some friends of ours who opened up a
Pita Pit franchise. They said “come and learn about Our qsr franchise opportunity”
so we did and I really bought into the idea of a franchise. I started my business in
2006 after my daughter was born and I fell in love with my shadowbox so much
that I bought the franchise!

What is your favourite part of what you do? What is the biggest challenge? 
      I adore being invited into a
persons life to capture such a precious moment in time. It is a true honour to
be among family members at the hospital taking impressions of tiny hands and feet,
that is the best part of my job. There are 2 things very challenging to me. The
first is balancing family and work time and the second is doing bereavement
castings. It is very difficult when a parent loses a child and I’m called to
take castings. I’m so happy to be able to provide something a parent can
remember their child by, but it is very hard on my heart.
5.   Any advice to other ladies/moms looking to start their own business? 
      Don’t expect the moon. We are only
human, do what you can but remember your priorities. The reason we want to
start our own business is to stay at home and be with our kids, don’t ever
forget that!
